Adding Comments to an Astro Blog: Why I Chose Self-Hosted Artalk

Comments are finally making a comeback on the blog.

Back in March 2025, I wrote a post explaining why I was turning comments off entirely. At the time, actual organic engagement was practically nonexistent, and wading through relentless spam just wasn’t worth the trouble. My compromise was to push discussions over to social media. Still, there’s something irreplaceable about seeing genuine conversation happening right beneath an article.

During my WordPress days, dealing with bot-driven comment spam was an endless chore, though that just comes with the territory on WordPress. When I migrated the site over to Astro in November 2025, I intentionally held off on adding comments back because I wanted to keep the architecture strictly static and lean. Hosted third-party widgets like Disqus were out of the question; relying on an external service always runs the risk of sudden paywalls, unwanted tracking, or the platform shutting down out of nowhere. If comments were returning, the system had to be self-hosted, lightweight, and completely under my control.

Since I build web applications all the time, my initial instinct was to roll my own micro-service using Go or Rust with SQLite. Before reinventing the wheel, though, I decided to see if an open-source solution already checked all my boxes.

That search led me straight to Artalk.

Artalk ticked every requirement right out of the box:

• Go + SQLite backend: Incredibly lightweight with negligible RAM and CPU overhead.
• Native theme support: Seamlessly matches light and dark modes.
• OAuth social login: Lets real readers authenticate quickly while deterring bot networks.

For now, I’ve enabled sign-in via Google and Patreon. I originally planned on supporting Sign in with Apple as well, until I remembered Apple charges a $99/year Developer Program fee just to generate the credentials needed for web authentication.

We’ll see how well this setup holds up against bots over the coming weeks, and I’ll share an update if spam starts slipping through. In the meantime, try out the new form below! Update: I actually have had this up now for over a week now. I haven’t received any comments from other people, but, I haven’t received any spam. I call that a win 😄
