Also, have you checked the event logs? I am guessing you are using windows XP? See if this changes anything when shutting down. download http://hightekcafe.com/projects/shutdown.exe to your desktop and run it. if you get the same error let me know. I followed your instructions and seem to have gotten rid of the virus... however, my pc still won't shut down.
